NATCHEZ — Wednesday afternoon will mark the end of the regular season for Cathedral High School’s tennis team as the Green Wave will take on district and cross-town rival Adams County Christian School.
Cathedral’s tennis team is being led by head coach Catherine Pourciau and assistant coach Noreen Pyron. Pyron said the matches between Cathedral and ACCS at the Duncan Park Tennis Courts will start at 3:30 p.m. She added that both teams will have a Senior Day during the match so the seniors on both schools’ teams will be honored.
“We’ll do it right before the matches start. We’ll do it right before the start of play. We’ll recognize them about 3:00, 3:15 p.m.,” Pourciau said.
“This is our last regular-season match,” Pyron said. “We have a district tournament next week in Vicksburg at Halls Ferry Park.”
But unlike years past when Cathedral traditionally had one of best tennis teams in the state and regularly competed for South State and State championships, whether it be in the MHSAA or the MAIS, this year has been a tough one for the Green Wave.
“They’re doing okay. We’ve got a young team. We’ve got a few seniors, including Alex Monagan, who’s got a full-ride scholarship to Howard University in Washington, D.C.,” Pyron said. “We’re not winning many matches, but we’re doing okay.”

“It’s been alright. Overall, we’ve done pretty well. We have six seniors – three boys and three girls. We have Alex. We also have Joseph Misita, Peyton Covington, Lacy Welch, Kinslee Young, and Anna Grace Britt.”
Cathedral’s tennis team has played six matches so far this year and has an overall record of 2-4. Pourciau noted that the girls’ side has won four matches and lost only two. She added that several young players on both the girls’ and boys’ team have really stood out to her.
“On my girls’ side, I have Tatum Brumfield and Anna Arthur. They are freshmen. Also, Lillie Probst has come a long way. She’s in the eighth grade,” Pourciau said. “On my boys’ side, Tracen Cusic and J.Z. Wingfield have stood out. They are both eighth-graders. I have a very young boys’ team.”
