JENKINS: After graduating from Natchez High School in 2020, I enlisted in the United States Army Reserve. Upon returning from initial training, I began my education at Alcorn State University, majoring in Political Science/Pre-Law. I cherished the opportunity to serve my country, but I understood it was only a part-time commitment. Consequently, I applied for a position with the Natchez Police Department, as I could not envision a better way to serve my community. I commenced the Police Academy on my 21st birthday, which made me eligible to become a police officer. To me, this was a sign, and I have been passionate about the job ever since.

ND: What do you enjoy most about your work?

JENKINS: There are numerous aspects of my job that I find fulfilling, but the most rewarding is the opportunity to assist, serve, and protect the citizens of Natchez in the most exemplary manner possible.

ND: What are the most challenging aspects of your job?

JENKINS: In my opinion, the most challenging aspect of my job is witnessing the expressions on the faces of loved ones during the most unimaginable situations. As first responders, we arrive on the scene well before others, and having to deliver the worst news, witnessing the absolute breakdown of individuals, is undeniably the most difficult part of my duties.

ND: What skills are important for the work you do?

JENKINS: To excel in this job, one must possess integrity and uphold a strong moral standard. Discipline is essential, and in many circumstances, empathy is crucial. Above all, fairness in judgment must be maintained at all times.

ND: What do you wish more people knew about law enforcement officers and your work in the community?

JENKINS: I wish more people understood the dedication and commitment that law enforcement officers bring to their roles every day. Our work goes beyond enforcing laws; it’s about building trust and relationships within the community. We strive to serve and protect citizens in every circumstance, even in challenging and high-pressure situations. It’s crucial for the community to recognize that officers are human, too, with a genuine desire to make a positive impact and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.

ND: What would you say to someone else considering this career path?

JENKINS: I would say that a career in law enforcement is both challenging and rewarding. It requires a strong sense of duty, integrity, and a commitment to serving and protecting the community. You must be prepared to face difficult situations with empathy and fairness and maintain a high moral standard. If you are passionate about making a positive impact and are ready to embrace the responsibilities that come with the badge, then law enforcement could be a fulfilling path for you.

ND: What do you like to do when you’re not working? Do you have a hobby or activity people would be surprised to learn about?

JENKINS: When I’m not at work, I dedicate my time to being with my two children, Harmony and Kason. Music is my passion, and during my off time, whether it’s meticulously tending to yard work, grilling, or passionately playing the drums, these activities not only provide a balance to the demands of my career but also allow me to express my creativity and maintain a strong connection with my family.

ND: Is there anything else you’d like to share with us and our readers?

JENKINS: Law enforcement, above all else, is the most rewarding career. I take immense pride in the work I do and find great satisfaction in witnessing the expressions of relief from citizens when we, as police officers, arrive on the scene. Our presence reassures the community that they are protected and supported.
