NATCHEZ — After being swept by St. Aloysius High School last week to start MAIS District 4-5A play at 0-3, Adams County Christian School’s varsity baseball team needed a win in the worst possible way to keep its playoff hopes alive.
Especially with ACCS looking up at both St. Aloysius and cross-town rival Cathedral High School in the district standings at 3-0 and 2-1, respectively after the Green Wave took two out of three games last week from Copiah Academy.
Last Tuesday afternoon at Chester Willis Field, the Rebels were up for the challenge. Parker Roach held a good-hitting Cathedral team to just four hits and Coleman Carter drove in three runs to lead ACCS to a 5-3 win over the Green Wave.
Roach was the winning pitcher as he went five innings and allowed three runs, two of them earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Rebels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Carter. The Green Wave then tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning on a Owen Jordan groundout.
But it was the top of the third inning when ACCS jumped on Cathedral starting pitcher Ethan Keith to the tune of four runs on three base hits. Carter gave the Rebels the lead for good with a two-run double. Caden Aplin then doubled to bring in Carter, and Levi Beasley singled to score Aplin.
Keith was pulled after three and two-thirds innings. He was charged with the loss after allowing five runs, only one of them earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Eli Wilson came on in relief and held the Rebels two hits, walked just one, and struck out two batters over three and one-third innings.
Carter ended up going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and one run scored. He and Aplin were not the only Rebels who hit a double. So did Roach as well as Sean Kerry Cothern. Carter also pitched one and two-thirds innings of shutout ball in relief, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking just one.
Keith did have a solid performance at the plate as he went 2-for-4. Landon French was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Tripp Wimberly was walked three times, stole three bases, and scored two runs.
ACCS improved to 11-6 overall and 1-3 in district play while Cathedral fell to 11-9 overall and 2-2 in district play. The two teams will battle it out on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in an important varsity doubleheader for both teams at ACCS.
