NATCHEZ—The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is preparing to offer its Home Defense Class, a two-day course that teaches self-defense and provides gun safety and training.

“This class used to be called Ladies Beware, but men took offense, and I don’t blame them. They said they needed training, too. It has now evolved to include men,” said Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten.

The class, taught by the command staff of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, includes teaching participants some hand-to-hand self-defense tactics and situational awareness, Patten said.

“We will also teach gun safety. We will take them to the firing range, help familiarize them with whatever gun they bring to the class, and teach them to shoot.”

The class is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the firing range, 200 Foster Mound Road.

“This class is for adults only. There is no limit on the age of people who can participate, but you must be at least 21,” he said.

The class will be limited to 40 people, who will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

“You must come to the sheriff’s office to fill out an application,” Patten said. “There is no applying online.

“You will be amazed at what you will learn. There is a lot of experience in the people who will be teaching this class. And it’s free. There is no cost to participate,” he said.
