BROOKHAVEN — On Monday, April 7, Cathedral High School’s golf team did what first-year head coach Mike Norris said he wanted the Green Wave to do — qualify for the 2025 MAIS Class 5A South State Tournament.
But this past Monday on a warm but windy day at The Clubs at Ole Brook, the season came to what in years past would have been a bitter end for Cathedral as the Green Wave finished last among the eight teams that played at the South State Tournament.
The Green Wave ended up with a team score of 404. The four teams that did qualify for next week’s state tournament are Parklane Academy, Copiah Academy, Bowling Green School, and Brookhaven School. While this was the final tournament for seniors Aiden Huff, Tate White, and Wesley Simpson, as well as Jackson Webb, Norris said the future looks bright for Cathedral’s golf team.
“We did not qualify for State. But our goal this year was to qualify for South State,” Norris said. “With three freshmen on the team, I hope we set a precedent to qualify for State. That’s what we set to do.”
Those three freshmen are Grant Carlson, Zach Lees, and Jake Middleton. Even though they will be sophomores when the 2026 season starts, they will be the veterans on the team.
Norris said that Parklane Academy finished in first place while Brookhaven Academy came in fourth place.
“Parklane Academy’s got a couple of kids that are going to play college golf. They’re pretty good,” Norris said.
Yes, the wind was a big factor on the par-70 course throughout the day, making an already tough course even tougher. And that led to even higher scores than it yields.
“The scores were probably the highest I’ve seen them all year long from everyone. The course was playing real tough. It elevated everybody’s scores. It was a tough track,” Norris said.
Besides Cathedral, the other teams that did not qualify for the Class 5A State Tournament were Adams County Christian School, St. Aloysius High School, and Silliman Institute.
As for how Cathedral did at the 2025 MAIS District 4-5A Tournament held the previous Monday at the Quail Hollow Golf Course at Percy Quin State Park near McComb, Norris said the Green Wave finished either third or fourth with a team score of 347.
“We were just looking to shoot a score to qualify,” Norris said. “That was how we qualified for South State.”
