NATCHEZ — After setting several school and all-time state records at three different track meets across the state of Mississippi held during the month of March, Natchez High School track standout and Natchez Early College Academy senior Markeith Thompson was looking to add to his list of impressive accomplishments earlier this month.

At the Woody Barnett Invitational meet in Pearl on Monday, April 7, Thompson did just that. He came in first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 37.90 seconds and in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.50 seconds.

“He’s undefeated this season in both the 300-meter hurdles and the 110-meter hurdles,” NHS head track coach Kelly Thomas said. “He’s No. 1 in the state and in the United States in the 110-meter hurdles.”

Next up for Thompson is the MHSAA Class 5A South State Meet in Hattiesburg on Friday, April 25.

“Everyone from the Southern Region will be there,” Thomas said. “We just had the Region 3-5A Meet in Brookhaven last Thursday (April 17).”

Thompson finished in first place in all four events he participated in at the Region 3-5A Meet. And if excelling in two different hurdles events as part of the running events isn’t enough, he’s now doing the same in two field events.

He ended up first in the long jump with a jump of 22 feet, 5 inches as well as in the triple jump, with a jump 44 feet and 11 inches. In the 110-meter hurdles, his time was 13.68 seconds and in the 300-meter hurdles, he went 37.43 seconds. And, yes, he won those events yet again.

In the team competition at the Region 3-5A meet, Natchez High’s boys’ team finished in third place behind first-place Brookhaven High School and second-place North Pike High School.
