NATCHEZ – Shirley Freeman Hughey passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on May 9, 2025, in Natchez.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Immanuel Baptist Church, with Rev. Dillon Wickliff officiating.
Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Nunnery Cemetery in Amite County, MS, under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 10 until 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Immanuel Baptist Church.
Born on Oct. 29, 1937, in Liberty, MS, Shirley was the daughter of Lee and Annot Coleman Freeman.
She was a loving grandmother, mother, sister, and friend-known for her quiet strength, deep devotion to family, and friendships that lasted a lifetime.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby G. Hughey; her son, David Hughey, and his wife, Marisa; her grandson, Daniel Hughey; her brothers, Adolph, Flavius, and Ottis Freeman; and her sisters, Kathryn Whittington, Era Dell Bateman, and Ina Davis.
Shirley is survived by her grandchildren, Matthew Hughey and his wife, Amanda, and Katelyn Wallace and her husband, Austin, all of Liberty, MS; her great-grandchildren, Dakota Wallace of Liberty and Kinzie Hughey of McComb, MS; her sister, La Faye Martin of Blytheville, AR; her brother, Larry G. Freeman and his wife, Mary of Livingston, TX; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dearest friend, Sandra Stokes of Natchez.
A woman of many talents and a generous heart, Shirley found joy in cooking, sewing, fishing, gardening, and picking blueberries. She loved being surrounded by her family and always welcomed others with kindness. A dedicated volunteer, she served several organizations with enthusiasm and care. Her faith was central to her life-she was a devoted member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where her joyful spirit and servant’s heart touched everyone she met.
Her legacy of love, compassion, and resilience will continue to inspire all who knew her.
