NATCHEZ – Graduating seniors can apply now for two scholarships that honor the legacy of Wharlest and Exerlena Jackson.
The Jackson Legacy Scholarships honor the legacy of Wharlest Jackson Sr. and his wife, Exerlena, in showing selfless courage and sacrifice in the cause of racial and social justice for all.
Jackson was murdered on Feb. 27, 1967, when a bomb was detonated under his truck as he left work at Armstrong Tire & Rubber Co. in Natchez. He was the first African-American to hold a skilled position at Armstrong, and he served as treasurer of the Natchez NAACP. He and his wife were active in voter education and registration and advocated for better educational and employment opportunities, civic engagement and civil rights for African-Americans in the Natchez community.
The two $500 scholarships aim to support underrepresented students who aspire to further their education and career goals.
To qualify for the need-based scholarships, students must:
- Have a GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Be a member of an underrepresented group, such as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Women, LGBTQ+ and/or those with disabilities
- Demonstrate economic need
The application process includes a 500 word essay or 3 to 5 minute video submission that addresses the Jackson Legacy Project motto of “Justice, Empowerment, Legacy” and includes the student’s experience or interest in racial or social justice activities. Submissions should answer how receiving the Jackson Legacy Project Scholarship will assist in their long-term goals to contribute to movements for justice and social change.
The deadline for applying is 4 p.m. Central on Friday, June 13, 2025, and the online application can be found here.
