NATCHEZ — The case against a man accused of the death of a 10-year-old Amite County child is expected to be presented to a grand jury soon, said a source familiar with the case.
Cody Rollinson allegedly struck and killed Jordan Hill, 10, with his pickup truck on April 6, leading to Hill’s death. Hill was riding an ATV at the time.
Amite County officials charged Rollinson with felony leaving the scene of an accident and possession of marijuana.
Pending the grand jury’s decision, those charges could be upgraded to vehicular homicide.
Grand jury proceedings are held in secret to protect those who serve on the juries, as well as witnesses and defendants. Sixth Circuit District Attorney Tim Cotton would not comment on the grand jury, when it is expected to meet, or what cases will go before it. However, he did say toxicology reports from the accident have not been completed. Rollinson could also face additional charges should those show he was intoxicated at the time he struck and killed Hill.
Family and friends of Hill claim Rollinson did not stop to check on Hill or render aid at the time of the accident. He is alleged to have returned to the scene to retrieve a part from his truck after the accident.
Rollinson was given a $41,000 bond.
More than 100 people attended the funeral for young Hill, which was held at the National Guard Armory in Gloster. Hill was an avid baseball player, and his teammates awarded him as Most Valuable Player at his funeral.
The case has drawn the attention of national organizations, like the National PLUS Coalition, an activist group, whose president, Ashley Grubb-Harris, has sent emails to law enforcement and media calling for transparency in the case. Local residents have also commented on social media about what they feel are inappropriate charges to date for Rollinson.
