FERRIDAY, La. — A former public official of Concordia Parish, William Melvin Ferrington Sr., passed away on Saturday at age 92.
Funeral services will be held at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday on Thursday, May 29, at 2 p.m. with Bro. Glen Harrigill, Bro. Russell Wagoner and Bro. Tim Vanier officiating. The family will receive friends at Young’s Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Born in Wisner, Ferrignton was a businessman who retired from BP Amoco Oil and went on to own several restaurants. He served on the Police Jury for Concordia Parish for 22 years. For 12 of those years he was the police jury president.
Red Tiffee, current police jury board member who had served alongside Ferrington, said, “He was a good man, and attended to his business. He was a good person to work with.”
Former Police Jury member Willie Dunbar said, although he and Ferrington didn’t always agree on every issue, he had nothing but positive words to share about him.
“He got things done,” Dunbar said. “He believed in working with the people and when they asked him for something, he’d get it done. His wife and mine were pretty close and always had nice conversations. He was a good man and a great mentor to me. God bless his family.”
Ferrington was also a proud Mason for 49 years and was a member of Riverside Baptist Church.
He leaves behind his daughters, Janice Gillespie and her husband Dwight of Sicily Island, and Tammy Champion of Ferriday, as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
According to his obituary, “Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, trust and honesty, and friendship. He loved serving his parish and the people in it, and above all, serving God.”
