NATCHEZ — Trees falling down everywhere caused loss of power and blocked roads, affecting residents throughout Natchez. But some experienced worse from the storms over the Memorial Day holiday.

There have been at least three reports of houses suffering damage from a tree collapsing on them, including one on Edgewood Road in Natchez and Camp Street from storms Tuesday morning. Another house on Logtown Road in Adams County was damaged by a storm on Memorial Day, where a family inside was reportedly trapped for hours by live power lines tangled in a tree.

Thousands lost power on Tuesday morning in Adams County, including around 1,500 Entergy customers and around 1,000 Southwest Mississippi Electric Power Association customers.

“We have trees and power lines down all over town,” said Tom McGehee of Adams County Emergency Management. “We might have had straight line winds, but no tornadoes were mentioned by the National Weather Service,” as of Tuesday morning.

McGehee said another storm system is possible later on Tuesday.

“We’re still under a slight risk of storms for the day,” he said, noting that a timeframe for more weather in these isolated thunderstorms is hard to pinpoint.

According to NWS, damaging wind gusts and hail up to quarter-size are the primary hazards, but a tornado cannot be ruled out.

Mayor Dan Gibson cautioned drivers that the power loss in areas of Natchez have resulted in traffic signals not working.

“Lots of traffic lights are not working properly,” Gibson said. “MDOT crews are working to clear trees, as are city and county public works (departments). The police department and the sheriff’s office have had their hands full. We ask people to exercise caution as they move about the city.
“These storms, and particularly the storm this morning, really caused damage. We pray people are OK. Marla and I were up and praying at 6 o’clock this morning.”
