FERRIDAY, La. — Funeral services for William Melvin Ferrington Sr., 92, of Ferriday, will be held at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 2 p.m. with Bro. Glen Harrigill, Bro. Russell Wagoner and Bro. Tim Vanier officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Grove Cemetery in Wisner, under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Young’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Melvin was born on Saturday, Aug. 6, 1932, to Jade and Barbara Ferrington in Wisner. From there, he learned a very good work ethic. He retired from BP Amoco Oil and went on to own several restaurants. He served on the police jury for Concordia Parish for 22 years, 12 of those as President. Melvin was a proud Mason for 49 years. Melvin was a religious man and was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Melvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend. His favorite pastimes were getting out-fished by his wife and spending time with his family, as well as serving the people of Concordia Parish. He passed away at his home surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, May 24, 2025, and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
He is reunited with the love of his life of 64 years, Jackie Smith Ferrington; parents, Calvin Jade Ferrington and Barbara Herron Ferrington; brother, Ernest Berry; son, William Melvin Ferrington, Jr.; son-in-law, Ernest Champion; grandson, William Champion; great-granddaughter, Haley Gillespie Johnson; great-great-grandson, Gunner Johnson; very close family friend, Henry Vanier and Bud Broussard.
Those left behind to cherish William’s memories are his daughters, Janice Gillespie & her husband Dwight of Sicily Island, LA and Tammy Champion of Ferriday, LA; grandchildren, Maggie Johnson (Gary), Sam Gillespie, Jackie Gillespie (Julio), Little Dwight Gillespie, April Wicker (Chris), Dallas Pirman (Ryan), Sarah Fisher, and Jamie Ferrington (Lindsey); great-grandchildren, Kate Gillespie, Justyce and Liberty Zavala, Bailey Gillespie, Desi Mitchel, Daniel and Michael Wicker, Allie and Addison Pirman, Mackenize Fisher, Gavin Ferrington; great-great-grandchildren, Maverick and Jace Johnson and soon to be Oakley Mitchel; his faithful K-9, Oscar; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, trust and honesty, and friendship. He loved serving his parish and the people in it, and above all, serving God.
Those honoring William as pallbearers are Jamie Ferrington, Dwight Gillespie, Ryan Pirman, Chris Wicker, Gary Johnson, and Julio Zavala.
Honorary pallbearers will be Cary Berry, Lewis Smith, Jim Smith, and Tony Smith.
The family would like to thank the staff of Enhabit Hospice, especially Kelly, Angie, and Nicole, not only did they show him great love and care, but his family as well.
