City’s RAISE grant, monument update, senior center pool all on Tuesday’s agenda

NATCHEZ — The Natchez Mayor and Board of Aldermen face a full agenda when they meet Tuesday.

The meeting, which is open to the public, is on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Council Chambers, 115 S. Pearl St.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen meet at the Council Chambers on the second Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. and the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.

Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson will provide an update on the U.S. Colored Troops Monument project and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s RAISE grant.

Gibson will also ask aldermen to reappoint Melvin Davis and Delores Vines to the Natchez Water Works Board of Directors.

Lastly, Gibson will provide an update on the city work crew and state inmate strategy going forward.

City Attorney Jack Lazarus will discuss the sale of a vacant lot to Herman Ransom, seek the approval of a nine-month option for the sale of city-owned land at 318 Seargent S. Prentiss Drive with Horne Properties, and present a letter outlining the city’s responsibilities to the developer for that option.

The meeting will start with concerned citizen Sheri Brown, who wants to discuss with aldermen issues with the Natchez rideshare process.

Brown will be followed by Leah Hunter, executive director of the Downtown Natchez Alliance, who will present a report on that group’s recent activities.

James Johnston, the city’s community development director, is scheduled to discuss the Silver Street Brick Wall Rehabilitation Project, the Fry building abatement and demolition, work at the Natchez City Auditorium, the lighting of the Mississippi River Bridge, and progress at the Duncan Park Golf Clubhouse.

Carla Monroe, senior center director, will seek approval for funds from the Southwest Mississippi Planning and Development District for fiscal years 2026 through 2029.

Tuwanna Williams, who is in charge of a joint workforce development effort between the city, county, and Natchez Adams School District, will seek approval for two contracts involving the building trades program, permission to travel to two workshops, and approval of a contract with Copiah-Lincoln Community College that will allow funding for six Commercial Driver slots.

City Parks and Recreation Director Ryan Porter will recap this year’s Youth Baseball season and will discuss future plans and immediate needs for it.

Porter will also remind people of Saturday’s Fishing with Fathers and Friends, which will be held at Natchez State Park from 7 to 11 a.m. Porter will also seek permission to attend the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Program workshop on June 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Jackson.

City Inspector Jody Rutter will seek approval to hire Southeast Engineer Service to provide professional services for the Senior Citizen Center swimming pool.
