NATCHEZ — Adams County remains without its emergency sirens, which are inoperable because of needed parts and repairs.

Adams County Supervisors on Monday approved spending $56,849 to order the parts needed to make them operational again.

Robert Bradford, Adams County Emergency Management director, said he has asked to be on the agenda of the next meeting of the Natchez Mayor and Board of Aldermen to seek the city’s help in covering the costs of the repairs. Bradford said four of the sirens are located in the city.

The city meets next on Tuesday, June 24, at 6 p.m. at the Council Chambers, 115 S. Pearl St., Natchez.

The sirens in the county were made by Federal Signal, and that company is the sole provider of parts needed to repair and operate them.

The cost of repairs includes a software upgrade that will allow the sirens to be operated remotely.

“I will be able to control them with my phone,” Bradford said.

Also Monday, Bradford urged supervisors to take into account the coming changed from the federal government and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, when budgeting for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

“We don’t know the future of FEMA. If that department goes away, it will fall on the state, which means it will fall on the county,” to cover the costs of recovering from emergency situations, Bradford said. “The Road Department will be responsible for debris removal.”
