WINNSBORO, La. – The Concordia 7U All-Stars team is riding high after a dominant performance in the Dixie Youth District Tournament in Winnsboro last weekend, punching their ticket to the state tournament.
The team rolled through district competition last week, going undefeated in three straight games. On Thursday June 19, the team opened the tournament with an emphatic 13-3 win over West Monroe, thanks to a seven-run third inning. An error scored two runs, Reese Brumfield tripled in a run, Chandler Ellis singled in another, Barrett Brown grounded out to bring in two more, and Lyle Herring capped off the rally with an RBI single.
West Monroe struck first with two runs in the top of the first, but Concordia quickly responded. Maddox Thomas grounded out to plate one, and Ellis followed with a solo inside-the-park home run to make it a 3-2 game. From there, it was all Concordia.
Herring took the mound and delivered a stellar four-inning performance, allowing three unearned runs on just two hits while striking out four. Concordia tallied 12 hits in the game, led by leadoff hitter Wesson Farmer, who went 3-3. Thomas drove in five runs, while Brett Brufield, Brumfield, and Ellis each had multiple hits.
Friday’s game brought more fireworks as Concordia put on an offensive showcase as they beat Monroe 19-3. Brown had a big day at the plate, going 3-3 with two singles and a triple. Brumfield and Ellis each delivered early RBIs in a seven-run first inning. Concordia poured it on again in the second with another seven-run rally, fueled by some key hits from Brufield and Brown, along with some defensive mistakes by Monroe.
Herring earned the win on the mound, allowing just three runs over three innings, and Jack Cigler closed the door with a scoreless frame in relief. Thomas and Farmer joined Brown with three hits as Concordia piled up 18 hits.
In Saturday’s championship game, Concordia faced off with host team Winnsboro and once again came up on top, sealing the district crown with a 14-2 victory. Brumfield powered the offense, driving in four runs on a single and a triple. Brufield, Ellis, and Herring also notched key hits in a seven-run second that broke the game open.
Herring continued his dominance on the mound by allowing just two runs over three innings, while Concordia’s offense kept rolling with 15 total hits. Brufield, Brumfield, Farmer, along with Bennett Duplechin and Jeb Eliser each collected two hits in the win.
“They played great,” Coach Jordan Farmer said. “We really focused on defense. That’s what we’ve been preaching — make the routine plays and throw the ball straight. At seven years old, that’s what wins games.”
While Farmer admitted that the team’s hitting wasn’t at its peak, the bats still did enough to fuel their undefeated run.
“We hit the ball decently — not the best it’s been all year, but good enough. Our defense really carried us,” Farmer said.
With another championship ring added to their growing collection, the young All-Stars now set their sights on state competition. They are scheduled to open play on Thursday, July 3, in Shreveport, taking on a tough opponent in the Shreveport All-Stars.
“These kids love the game and love those rings,” Farmer said. “We’re proud of them and excited to see how we stack up at state.”
