NATCHEZ — A 24-year-old Hattiesburg man is being held at the Adams County Jail on domestic violence charges after Adams County E-911 Dispatch received a frantic call from the alleged victim’s mother in Arkansas.
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said at about 4:44 p.m. Tuesday, the Arkansas woman told dispatchers her daughter was being held at gunpoint inside a black Chevrolet truck with Rebel flags displayed on it.
At about 5:06 p.m. dispatchers put out a BOLO — be on the lookout — for the suspect vehicle, which was last known to be in the vicinity of the Mississippi River bridge.
“When I heard the BOLO, I immediately grabbed my vest and left the Adams County Sheriff’s Office building and entered my patrol unit and began responding toward the bridge with emergency lights and siren activated,” Patton said. “I knew I would be the closest officer to that vehicle.”
Dispatch advised that the mother of the alleged victim was still on the line and was tracking the suspect vehicle using the Life360 app, Patten said.
“As I turned onto John R. Junkin Drive from South Canal Street, dispatch relayed that the suspect had turned right onto Seargent S. Prentiss Drive from John R. Junkin and was traveling southbound toward Woodville,” he said.
Dispatch further advised that the suspect had physically assaulted the victim and was brandishing a firearm while continuing to drive south, Patten said.
He said he located the suspect vehicle and checked for the location of the nearest backup unit.
“Mississippi Highway Patrolman DeQuatarrius Jackson was the closest available unit. Together, we conducted a felony traffic stop on the suspect vehicle on U.S. 61 South near Hutchins Landing Road with weapons drawn,” Patten said.
Jackson approached the vehicle from the driver’s side, while Patten approached from the passenger side.
“We issued multiple loud verbal commands instructing all occupants to show their hands. Both the driver and the passenger complied,” Patten said. “I then instructed the passenger to exit the vehicle and run toward my patrol unit. Once she was safely removed from the immediate area, MHP Officer Jackson placed the male suspect into custody while I maintained cover.”
After the suspect was secured, MHP Officer Jackson conducted a vehicle search and recovered the following items:
• one .45 caliber pistol.
• one 12-gauge shotgun.
• multiple rounds of ammunition
• one knife.
The suspect identified himself as James Baker, 24, of Hattiesburg. At this time, he is being charged with domestic violence/simple assault, Patten said.
Natchez Customs towed the suspect’s vehicle from the scene. The suspect and the victim were transported to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation.
“I am grateful for Trooper Jackson of the Mississippi Highway Patrol for the backup. Others were on the way, but he was the closest to me. I appreciate him answering the call,” Patten said.
