NATCHEZ — A man’s life was taken during the July 4 holiday in a shooting at Holiday Apartments in Natchez.

Retired coroner James Lee identified the victim as 30-year-old Damien Strickland, who was shot and killed on the doorsteps of an apartment, Lee said.

The Natchez Police Department is investigating the shooting and responded to the call at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” Lee said. “I have always held my breath on holidays because things just seem to happen. My heart and prayers go out to the families.”

Lee added he took the initial call for coroner service in place of Adams County Coroner Rosa Newman, who will handle this case further, including autopsy.
