Ferriday Gators, Vidalia All-Stars fall

MONROE, La. — The Ferriday Gators had gone through the entire summer season undefeated and with a deep pitching rotation were the favorites to win the 2015 Dixie Debs World Series.

Now if Ferriday, the Louisiana state champion, is going to accomplish its goal, it will probably have to do so without losing another game after the Gators were stunned by North Carolina 2-0 on a very hot late Sunday afternoon.

The same player for North Carolina scored both of its runs. In the top of the second inning, she scored on an overthrow to third base. Then in the top of the fifth, she scored with two outs on a slow roller.

Caroline Gore went the distance for North Carolina and held Ferriday to just four hits.

“She threw a lot of high pitches and we swung at a lot of high pitches,” Gators head coach Rut Horne said. “We got ourselves out of two innings because of poor base-running.”

The first bunt attempt led to an easy double play after the catcher for North Carolina caught the ball and threw to first to end that threat.

“The second bunt, we advanced the runner to second. She went between second and third and couldn’t get back to second. We advance the runner to second and it turns into a double play,” Horne said.

Starting pitcher Paige Bryan was charged with the loss after allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout and no walks in two innings. Marty Lewis gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts over three innings. Taylor Rodgers retired all six batters she faced, four of them by way of strikeouts, in her two innings.

Marty Lewis and Brianna Henson each went 1-for-2 with a double while both Katelin Temple and Maecee Thornton were 1-for-2.

The Ferriday Gators next take on Florida today at 4 p.m.

Latin America 4, Southwest (Vidalia L.L.) 0

LOWER SUSSEX, Del. — Nachaly Rivera-Gonzalez pitched a complete-game two-hitter as the Latin America champion Asofem Little League team from Puerto Rico defeated the Southwest regional champion from Vidalia Girls Little League 4-0 Sunday night in Pool A action at the 2015 Senior League Softball World Series.

Rivera-Gonzalez took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning before it was broken up by a lead-off single by Lexie Emanuel. Rivera-Gonzalez finished with 12 strikeouts and just one walk.

“Their pitcher kept us off balance throughout the game. She had a good changeup and curveball,” Vidalia head coach Wesley McCarver said.

The game was scoreless through three innings before Latin America broke through with three runs off Vidalia pitcher Elizabeth Smith in the top of the fourth inning and added one more run in the top of the fifth.

Smith had a solid outing on the mound for Vidalia as she also went the distance and allowed four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and only one walk.

“She did really good on the mound. We had a great defensive game. They bunted the ball and made a couple of miscues,” McCarver said. “They were a very disciplined team.

Vidalia will take on the Millsboro-Georgetown All-Stars, the host team from Delaware District III, today at 7 p.m.
