FERRIDAY — Eight turnovers and 13 penalties doomed the Ferriday Trojans in their last game, a 45-26 loss to Wilkinson County.

But head coach Dwight Woods has his troops ready to play once again, as they welcome an 0-4 Washington-Marion team to town.

“We have had a good week of practice,” Woods said. “The kids seem to understand it takes a lot more to win games.”

Woods didn’t shy away from what did the Trojans in against Wilkinson County, and said it has been a point of emphasis this week.

“The big issue is turnovers,” he said. “We know we have to take better care of the ball. Penalties killed a couple of our drives, too, and those two things together we have to cut down on.”

Washington-Marion head coach Freddie Harrison is no stranger to Ferriday, after coaching the Trojans for three seasons ending in 2009.

“Freddie coached down here and is familiar with the kids, and he’ll have his kids ready to play,” Woods said.

Despite an 0-4 record, Woods said the Charging Indians aren’t to be taken lightly.

“They’ve played a killer schedule so far,” Woods said. “Every team they have played has been ranked. They are going to be huge, physical and play fast.”

After defending a pass heavy offense last week, the Trojans will be tested in the trenches this week defensively against a wing-T offense from Washington-Marion. The Charging Indians average 254 rushing yards per game this season.

“We are going to squeeze where we need to squeeze and try to get our linebackers to fill,” Woods said. “We want to eliminate the big run. Every now and then, it is going to hit, but the idea is to not let it hit multiple times.”

On the offensive side of things, Woods said the Trojans are hoping to find some success through the air.

“They play some 3-3-5 and sometimes a 4-2-5 and seem to blitz a good amount,” Woods said. “Up front they are huge, so they are going to get a pretty good push from those guys. I think we’ll have opportunities to throw in the middle of the field and possibly get a few runs on the inside.”

Ferriday and Washington-Marion are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
