MONTEREY — Coming off its first win of the season last Tuesday night at home against the Block High School Lady Bears, the Ferriday High School Lady Trojans were looking to take that momentum into the Monterey High School Basketball Tournament.

And while Ferriday’s varsity girls’ basketball team did play well against the LHSAA Class 4A Grant High School Lady Cougars last Wednesday, the same could not be said about the Lady Trojans’ performance against the tournament host and Class B Monterey Lady Wolves.

Unfortunately, the Lady Trojans ended up going 0-2 in tournament play for the second time this season. They lost a close one to Grant 53-41 and then two nights later were embarrassed by Monterey 57-22.

And while a very young Ferriday girls’ team ended up on the wrong end of the scoreboard in both games, Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron said she was thankful for the opportunity for her team to play in this tournament.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever played in the Monterey Tournament since I’ve been coaching here,” Abron said. “I appreciate coach (Eric) Richard for inviting us.”

In the loss to Grant, Class 2A Ferriday did its best to stay with a team from a higher classification. Abron said her Lady Trojans played as well as they could both offensively and defensively.

The Lady Trojans trailed the Lady Cougars 17-11 after one quarter of play and 29-20 at halftime. Ferriday tried to stay within striking distance of Grant, but was still outscored 10-7 in the third quarter, giving the Lady Cougars a 39-27 lead. But Ferriday would not go down quietly.

“The first game I thought we played well. I thought we showed some improvements. We got it down to five (in the fourth quarter) and then we made a few mistakes. We just didn’t score well at the end.”

And that led to Grant matching Ferriday with each team scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter and the 12-point win.

Zaria Boxley led Ferriday with 15 points while Jakeria Griggs and Zakari Pryor added seven points each. K. Pepper led Grant with a game-high 26 points and Ta’Lairia Gaines finished with 15 points.

Last Friday night was as coach Abron put it “a totally different game” in the Lady Trojans’ stunning 35-point loss to the tournament host Lady Wolves.

And one player for Monterey who could not be stopped, or even slowed down for that matter, was Addy Lacaze, who led all scorers with 36 points. Not only that, the Lady Wolves took advantage of several turnovers committed by Ferriday.

“We made a lot of mistakes. We dealt with a hot hand (Lacaze) and no one wanted to defend her,” Abron said. “We went back to the way we were playing.”

Monterey led Ferriday 12-5 after one quarter of play and 20-12 at halftime before pulling away in the second half. The Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Trojans 21-8 in the third quarter and 16-2 in the fourth quarter.

Macee Green and Erin Tiffee contributed with six points each for the Lady Wolves. Zaria Boxley and McKenzy Clay led the Lady Trojans with five points apiece.

Ferriday (1-5) traveled to Delhi, La. to take on Delhi Charter School at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
