In the end, consistency won out as Leigh Brannon of Colonial-Deerfield Golf Course in Madison followed up a first round 72 with a second round 73 to win the Gulf States Michelob MPGA Chapter Championship at Beau Pre Country Club.
Ernest Ross of Country of Jackson shot the identical score, but Brannon fired a birdie on the first playoff hole to win the championship.
&uot;Both guys are former champions,&uot; said Beau Pre Golf Pro Mark Powell.
Ernie Blue of Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point led the tournament after the first round Monday with a 69, but shot an 80 Tuesday to finish seventh.
&uot;Ernie was playing real well, but hit a couple of bad shots,&uot; Powell said. &uot;This course can make you pay for that.&uot;
Powell shot a 151 to finish 13th, Marvin Gray of Duncan Park placed 15th at 152, while Natchez native Blane Merritt shot a 156.
&uot;Everyone was really impressed with the golf course,&uot; Powell said. &uot;It was the biggest chapter championship we’ve ever had.&uot;
