Cathedral High’s softball team remained unbeaten on the season with a 9-2 win over Natchez at the Natchez Girls Softball Complex Tuesday.
Cathedral scored two runs each in the first three innings and added three in the fifth.
Natchez scored one run in the third and another in its last at bat.
CHS combined for 10 hits, to five for Natchez. Cathedral had five errors to six for Natchez.
&uot;I’m not really happy with our defense,&uot; said Cathedral coach Lynn Ogden. &uot;We are not doing the fundamentals, such as calling for the ball and we’re overthrowing bases. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re still working.&uot;
Cathedral was led at the plate by Jessica Barrett, who had three hits, including her second home run of the season. Krystal Groom doubled, while Hester Bown added a triple.
Betsi McGraw also tripled, while Keish Hinson singled.
&uot;We had 10 hits out of 37 at bats,&uot; Ogden said. &uot;The bottom of our lineup accounted for runs in a couple of innings, which is what I’ve been counting on. But we have to start hitting better.&uot;
Shameka Owens and Rosetta Ikard singled twice for Natchez, while Christal Sylvester and Krystal Brown both tripled for the Lady Bulldogs.
Natchez High fell to 1-5.
&uot;I expected us to do a lot better today,&uot; said Natchez coach Sue Johnson. &uot;We have got to step it up a notch. You have to go through something like this to appreciate winning.&uot;
Natchez won the junior varsity game 3-2. Kelsie Stephens had two singles for the Lady Wave.
Cathedral hosts Franklin County Thursday, while Natchez is at Loyd Star.
