There will be several winners in the Beau Pre Country Club Championship into the next century. But only one can brag about being the first.
Right now P.Z. Brewer is halfway there.
&uot;I think it would be great to be the first champion,&uot; Brewer said of the course which opened in July. &uot;I&160;want my name to be the first on the trophy.&uot;
Brewer shot a first round 74 Saturday to hold a two-stroke lead over Howard Jones going into today’s final round.
&uot;I didn’t play well, but I didn’t make many mistakes,&uot; Brewer said. &uot;I&160;hit a couple of bad shots and was penalized for it.&uot;
Brewer said he has become a little more used to the course.
&uot;I don’t get to play it as much since I’m living in Jackson now, but it’s a good course,&uot; he said.
Brewer is counting on a golf management course he recently took up to get him through today.
&uot;My mental game has improved a lot,&uot;&160;he said. &uot;When it gets to crunch time, I know what I have to do.&uot;
Sitting alone in third place three strokes behind Brewer is Mike Cook at 77.
C.C. Barnes, Bill Byrne and Lloyd Trisler are at 79, while Woody Allen is at 80.
Bubba Kaiser leads the first flight with an 81. Rob Smith, Al Guido and Greg Whitam are at 82, while Chris Martin and Ward Graning follow at 83.
