Services for Mary Ellen Hackett, 78, of Natchez, who died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999 at Claiborne County Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Ford Sr. officiating.
Burial will be in the Pine Hill Memorial Park under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Hackett was born Feb. 8, 1921 in Jefferson County, the daughter of Gip Butler and Josephine Butler.
She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, Missionary Society, Senior Choir, Sunday School Teacher, leader of Adams County Young People’s Dept. of Adams County and Baptist Association, Order of Eastern Star – Ruth Chapter No. 3.
Survivors include a daughter and spouse, Linda B. and Natheniel Jr. Martin of Port Gibson; one sister, Maudrene Young of Compton, Calif.; one brother and spouse, James and Margaret Butler of Tillman; sister-in-law, Johnnie Lee Butler of Port Gibson; niece, Patricia Young; nephews, Gip A. Bulter III, Tony Butler and Dino Young; three godchildren, Hattie B. Ellis, LaToya Brown and Paul F. Lewis; a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be deacons of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Hilda Louise Johnson
Dec. 19, 1920 – Sept. 7, 1999
Services for Hilda Louise Johnson, 78, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at George F. West Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy White officiating.
Burial will be at Pine Hill Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 19, 1920 in Tensas Parish, La., the daughter of Henry Johnson and Loudenia H. Branch. She was a nursing assistant at Natchez Charity Hospital and was a Baptist.
Survivors include Mary H. Davis; two special cousins, Elijah Hawkins and William and wife Polly Blowe of Natchez; and a number of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be William Davis, Thomas Lewis, Gary Stewart, Alvin Hawkins, William Blowe and Elijah Hawkins.
Louis White Jr.
Nov. 30, 1924 – Sept. 1, 1999
Services for Louis &uot;Baby&uot; White Jr., 74, of Natchez, who died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999 at Natchez Regional Center, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Percy Turner officiating.
Burial will be at the church cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial service is from 7 to 8:30 today at the funeral home. The procession leaves the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.
Mr. White was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Adams County, son of the Rev. Louis White and Martha White. He was retired from Johns Manville and a member of Homestead Society, Cannonsburg-Churchhill Water Association Board Member and Usher Board. His religious affiliation was Baptist.
Mr. White was preceded in death by five brothers; one sister; three sons, Baby White, Bobby Lewis White and Rev. John Edward White.
Survivors include his wife, Susie B. White; six sons and their wives, Louis A. White of Ellenwood, Ga., Earl and Dorothy White of Vacaville, Calif., Julius White of Shreveport, La., Robert White of Desoto, Texas, Monroe and Mary White of Douglasville, Ga. and Raymond and Arnetta White of Ellenwood, Ga.; six daughters and spouses, Pearl and Benjamin Pigott of Houston, Texas, Delores and Charles Jenkins of Farmington Hills, Mich., Beatrice Culley of Desoto, Castella White of Houston, Alma and Van Jackson of Olympia, Wash., Vera and Terry Jenkins of Norcross, Ga.; four brothers and their wives, Eligah White of Slidell, La., Roosevelt and Annie White of Natchez, L.A. and L.V. White of Natchez, Arieulas and Hazel White of Chicago, Ill.; four sisters and their husbands, Effie Woods, Edna and Edwin Holmes, Mandy and James Green, all of Natchez and Annie and Harry Dennis of Chicago; two sisters-in-law, Girtrude White and Thelma White, both of Natchez; two uncles, Eligah Turner of Inkster, Mich., Monroe Turner of Los Angeles, Calif.; three aunts, Cora White of Natchez, Annie Bell Stokes and Tempy Patterson, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; God child, Martha Robb of Edward; 27 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Charlotte Bonney Tolliver

WOODVILLE – Services for Charlotte Bonney Tolliver, 78, of Woodville, who died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999 at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Green Baptist Church with the Rev. Roosevelt Palmer officiating.
Burial will be at East Cedar Rest Cemetery in Woodville.
Visitation is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Tolliver was born Sept. 22, 1920 in Woodville, the daughter of Melbert and Florence Bonney.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mark Baptist Church of Woodville, St. Mark Missionary Society and served on the Deaconess Board.
Mrs. Tolliver was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ned Tolliver Sr.; two sisters; six brothers, including her twin Charles; and one child.
Survivors include nine sons, Ned Tolliver Jr. of Cleveland, Jessie Tolliver, Willie Tolliver, James Tolliver, Melbert Tolliver and John Tolliver, all of New Orleans, La., Charles Tolliver of Jackson, Oliver Tolliver and Roosevelt Tolliver, both of Baton Rouge, La.; five daughters, Violet T. Baxter and Legusta T. Jackson of Philadelphia, Pa., Marie T. Davis of Dallas, Texas, Audrey T. Dangerfield and Patricia T. Perry of Woodville; one step-daughter, Lebora T. White of California; one parental daughter, Pandy Tolliver; one sister, Florence Stirgus Brazil of Baton Rouge; three brothers, David Bonney of Jackson, Willie Stirgus of Lucedale and Cleveland Stirgus of Woodville; eight daughters-in-law; three sons-in-law; one brother-in-law; three sisters-in-law; 33 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Phil Brown Jr.

FERRIDAY, La. – Services for Phil Brown Jr., 58, of Winnsboro, La. formerly of Ferriday, who died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999 at St. Francis Hospital in Monroe, La., will be at noon Saturday at Great St. Reed Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Hollins officiating.
Burial will be at Concordia Cemetery on the Levee under the direction of R.D. Mackel and Sons Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Mr. Brown was born on Dec. 15, 1940 in Ferriday, La., the son of Delphine Thomas Brown and Phil Brown Sr.
He was a truck driver.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include two sisters, Lillian Johnson of Ferriday and Gloria Jean Carter of Olla, La.; five brothers, Levon Brown, Herbert Brown, Sherman Brown, all of Ferriday, Midge Brown of Clayton, La. and Marvin Brown of St. Louis, Mo.; five aunts, Eliza Harris of Natchez, Theresa Hunt of Baton Rouge, La., Tressie Thomas, Willie Lee Hills, Edith Snyder, all of Ferriday; one uncle, Tom Thomas of Ferriday; eight nephews; seven nieces; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
Rev. Lee Andrew Slan

WOODVILLE – Services for the Rev. Lee Andrew Slan, 71, of Woodville, who died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999 at his residence, will be at noon Saturday at Angola Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Sullivan officiating.
Burial will be at Cedar Rest No. 2 in Woodville under the direction of Williams and Williams.
Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Rev. Slan was born April 17, 1928 in Wilkinson County, the son of David Slan and Rendy Washington.
He was retired from the U.S. Forest Service. He was pastor of St. Luke Baptist Church of Woodville for 40 years and of Singleton Chapel Baptist Church of Woodville for 20 years. He was president of G.M.B. Association of Wilkinson County, of Union Benevolent Society of Woodville, of the Baptist Youth Training and of the Union Reform Society of Woodville. Rev. Slan was also a member of the State and National Baptist Conference, of the PMB Society of Louisiana and a board member of State Sunday School Congress, former deacon and Sunday school teacher at Angola Baptist Church and former president and treasurer at Angola Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla Slan and Rendy Bland, both of Woodville; one stepson, Bennie Cooper of Woodville; four sisters, Rosetta Broadway, Mary Magee, both of Baton Rouge, Ollie Slan of San Diego, Calif. and Carrie Prater of Clarksdale; two brothers, Matthew Slan Sr. of Woodville and Willie Henry Slan Sr. of Baton Rouge, La.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Wasner Jenkins, Tyser Brown, Mac Slan Jr., Matthew Slan Jr., Wayne Monroe and Sidney Mealey Jr.
Roosevelt Pickett
March 12, 1912 – Sept. 5, 1999
Services for Roosevelt Pickett, 87, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999 at Adams County Nursing Home, will be at noon Saturday at Church of God in Christ with Elder Elijah Lewis officiating.
Burial will be at Painters Cemetery in Robinson Bottom under the direction of Webb Funeral System.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Mr. Pickett was born March 12, 1912, the son of Elizabeth Early and Levi Marsaw Sr. He retired in 1975 from Buckles and Otts Brewer Sawmills and was a member of Church of God in Christ.
Survivors include five godchildren, Cynthia Marshall of Atlanta, Carol Simmons of Chicago, Rocaille Wallace of Ohio, Lampkin Lyles of Natchez and Viena Derry of Louisiana; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Camper of Dallas, Beatrice Reed and Martha Mitchell of Natchez and Cora Marsaw of Vidalia; three brothers-in-law, L.T. Camper of Dallas, J.B. Reed and Thomas Mitchell Sr. of Natchez; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers will be members and friends of the family.
S.K. Harris

FERRIDAY, La. – Services for S.K. Harris, 80, of Vidalia, La. formerly of St. Joseph, La., who died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999 in Vidalia, will be at 10 a.m. today at Young’s Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Kelly Barnett and Dr. Ray Robbins officiating.
Burial will be at Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton, La., under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home. He was a retired research superintendent with LSU Agricultural Extension Service, a member of St. Joseph Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Hardy Harris; two sister, Doris Ferben and Willy Wixon; three brothers, Wesley Harris, Elbert Harris and Albert Harris.
Survivors include his wife, Mearl Harris of Vidalia; two sons, Paul Harris and Ronnie Harris of Ferriday; a daughter, Deloris Paine of Monroe, La.; a brother, Sidney Harris of Delhi, La.; a sister, Mary Donahue of Darnell, La.
Pallbearers will be Billy Green, Buddy Hendrix, Robert May, Bobby Arthur, Jean Burris and Steve Crawford.
