Vikings run right past Newellton

The Vidalia Vikings’ running game gained over 400 yards while the defense held Newellton to under 200 yards of total offense in a 28-14 victory Friday night.

Dariel Mayes led the attack with 32 carries for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Jarrett Hoffpauir had three rushes for 43 yards and a touchdown and Leren Curry had seven carries for 42 yards.

&uot;The running backs, Mayes, Hoffpauir and Curry had a good game,&uot; Vikings head football coach Dee Faircloth said. &uot;The offensive blew some holes open for them.&uot;

Mayes scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, first on an 11-yard run and then on a 20-yard run. Mayes also scored on a two-point run after the second touchdown to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead.

Newellton scored in the second quarter on a 58-yard fumble recovery by Richard Booker. Richard Bass ran in for the two-point conversion to make it the score 14-8. Hoffpauir then scored on a 29-yard run. The kick was no good and the Vikings led at the half 20-8.

The Vikings scored their final points in the third quarter on a 21-yard run by Mayes. Curry made the extra point.

Newellton scored in the fourth quarter on a six-yard pass from Darium Clark to Jason Puryear. The extra point was no good.

&uot;Our kids did a good job and they played hard. Our rushing offense had over 400 yards,&uot; Faircloth said. &uot;We had five touchdowns called back, but we eventually scored on three of them.

&uot;Newellton played hard as well. We got out with no injuries. We got the big dogs coming now. Winnsboro is tough to beat.&uot;

Vidalia improved to 2-0 and will play at Winnsboro next Friday. Newellton dropped to 1-1 and will play next Friday at Sterlington.
