J.W. Calhoun, above, inspects his cotton at his Monterey, La., farm. Calhoun isn’t expecting a good harvest for 1999. He hasn’t received a significant rainfall since July 11. His cotton is more than six feet tall but doesn’t have healthy cotton bolls. Most of his cotton bolls on have four bolls and five seeds in the cotton. Cotton that has the proper amount of rain usually has 9-10 seeds in the strands of cotton.
