Burrell rushes to honor

Chamberlain-Hunt Academy junior running back Matthew Burrell knew the Wildcats needed a big game to stay in the MPSA District 4A.

Burrell made sure CHA had just that as the 6-foot, 180-pounder rushed for 261 yards on 39 carries in the Wildcats’ 28-27 win over Union. His stellar play earned him the honor of The Natchez Democrat’s Player of the Week.

Burrell scored on two 8-yard runs and a 40-yard run.

The win lifted CHA to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in district.

&uot;We’ve been on the edge and knew we needed to win,&uot; Burrell said. &uot;We started out up and down, but we’re getting on a roll now.&uot;

Burrell said the Wildcats played more consistent in the second half.

&uot;The offensive line did a good job and opened up some holes,&uot; Burrell said. &uot;I just go out and try to play the best I can.&uot;

Henry Cooper had eight tackles, three sacks and returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown for the Wildcats. Jerry Lee Messer collected 12 tackles and three tackles for losses.

Trinity quarterback William McGehee completed 10 of 20 passes for 158 yards, rushed for 29 more and 16 tackles in the Saints’ 21-0 win over Briarfield.

Chad Ridley caught four passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns, while Josh Bass had three receptions for 63 yards. Scott Maggio had nine tackles and a sack.

Dariel Mays rushed for 118 yards on 19 carries in Vidalia’s 42-6 win over Jonesboro-Hodge. Chris Kennedy had three receptions for 60 yards. Jarrett Hoffpauir completed 6 of 8 passes for 134 yards and rushed for 30 more.

ACCS’s Ryan Porter caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Ty Smith and took a lateral 80 yards for another score in the Rebels’ 46-26 loss to Parklane. Hayden Wadsworth collected eight tackles and two sacks.

Ferriday quarerback Aron Thomas passed for 145 yards in the Trojans’ 31-16 loss to Winnsboro.

Natchez High lineman Israel Calvit and cornerback Troy Leake had 10 and nine tackles, respectively. Calvit had three tackles for losses.

Centreville Academy Matthew Tolbert rushed for 162 yards on 21 carries in the Tigers’ 28-7 win over Oak Forest. Jamie Norsworthy collected 10 tackles and returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown.

Chris Guidry of Pine Hills rushed for 155 yards on 15 carries in the Wildcats’ 19-0 win over River Oaks. Chris Ellis had 17 tackles, while Shane Lofton and Jason Wallace collected 10 each.

Stephens McVea rushed for 114 yards on 25 carries in WCCA’s 27-19 loss to Brookhaven. Brannon Farrar had 10 tackles, while Clint Flowers had nine tackles and two sacks.

Stanley Hazleton of Tensas Academy rushed for 129 yards in the Chiefs’ 62-0 win over Rebul. David Crigler passed for 205 yards. Chad Gregory had 13 tackles.

Quenton Jones and William Mealey had two touchdowns each in Wilkinson County’s 60-0 win over Jefferson County.
