Lady Wave capture share of title

Cathedral High can claim itself as co-champions of Division 6-2A after defeating St. Andrews 8-3 here Monday.

The Lady Wave, 13-5 overall, finish 6-2 in 6-2A, tied with Wesson (6-2) for first place.

A decision will be made today as to who will have the top seed in the playoffs. The playoffs begin Oct. 16.

Cathedral has finished second to Bogue Chitto in Division 7-1A the past few years, but the school moved up to 2A this year.

&uot;It’s pretty exciting,&uot; Ogden said of her first district championship in softball. &uot;You never know who you are going to do when you move up into a biger division. I really didn’t anticipate being in this position.&uot;

Ogden said she believes Cathedral could have won Division 7-1A.

&uot;Having played (and beaten) both Bogue Chitto and West Lincoln, I think we could have won it,&uot; she said. &uot;These girls have been working hard and put a lot of pressure on themselves

As for the game Monday, Krystal Groom hit two home runs, the first of which scored Cathedral’s first run in the second inning.

Cathedral then took control of the game by scoring six runs on five hits in the top of the third inning. Cathedral pounded out 13 hits for the game.

St. Andrews tried to come back by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third.

Groom then hit her second home run in the fifth inning to help Cathedral regain its six-run lead.

St. Andrews then scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it was not nearly enough as Cathedral did not let the home team score in the seventh inning to preserve the victory.

Keish Hinson went two for four. Hester Brown was two for three with a home run.

Carol Savant hit a double. Mary Margaret Alwood was three for three with a double. Amie Whittington was also three for three.
