Cathedral High senior outfielder Hester Rose Brown wasn’t sure how the Lady Wave would do moving up to Class 2A this year.

With one week left in the regular season, she has a much better or optimistic view.

&uot;I think we can win state,&uot; Brown said. &uot;I was skeptical at first, but after the first couple of games, I knew we would do fine.&uot;

Cathedral and Wesson tied for the Division 6-2A championship, splitting their series. Although Cathedral defeated Wesson more handily, the tiebreaker put in effect compared games played with third place teams St. Andrews and Loyd Star.

&uot;We all know we should be district champs, but we’re just going to go out there and prove it,&uot; Brown said. &uot;It just makes us mad and makes us want to get even.&uot;

Cathedral will play at Gulfport St. John Oct. 16 in a first round series.

The Lady Wave are 13-5 overall. Cathedral defeated St. Andrews 8-3 Monday to clinch the tie for first.

Brown went 2-for-3 with a home run in that contest.

Brown had four home runs in four games at the Brookhaven Tournament Saturday.

Despite collecting seven hits in that tournament, Brown has not been happy with batting.

&uot;I haven’t been doing as well as I would like lately, I’ve been popping up a lot,&uot; Brown said. &uot;I’m just trying to keep my head down and hit line drives.&uot;

Brown has played just about every position on the field.

&uot;I&160;used to like the infield, but the outfield has grown on me,&uot; she said.

Brown is one of seven seniors on the Lady Wave team.

&uot;This is the best Cathedral team I’ve been on,&uot; she said. &uot;Everybody has been stepping up and playing hard.&uot;

Brown said being a senior makes a difference.

&uot;I realize now what past seniors were saying and why they were wanting everybody to hustle and try harder,&uot; she said.

Brown also plays basketball and is a cheerleader.

&uot;I wish I could stay in high school forever,&uot; she said.

Brown, the daughter of Walt and Missy Brown, said her brothers Walt and Michael have helped her a lot.

&uot;They are both very supportive,&uot; she said. &uot;They are very interested in what I do.&uot;

Brown, who scored a 22 on her ACT and has a 3.1 grade point average, plans on attending Ole Miss.

&uot;I’m not sure what I want to do,&uot; she said. &uot;But I’m really going to miss my friends and classmates.&uot;
