Attorney General Mike Moore is promoting positive opportunities for Mississippi’s youth as he winds down his campaign for re-election.

Stopping at the Cherry Grove Plantation home of Cindy and Sam Gwin Thursday night, Moore mingled with local officials and community leaders, discussing his plans for Mississippi’s youth.

Moore calls his campaign for young people &uot;investing in children.&uot;

He proposes doubling the Girls and Boys Clubs in Mississippi from its current number of 34 to 70 by the year 2000, said Moore’s political director Jonathon Compretta.

Another youth project for Moore is promoting youth mentorship, Compretta said.

&uot;We want the young people to mentor the younger ones, becoming positive role models,&uot; Moore said.

With 11 days left in the campaign, the Moore tour is moving all over the state.

&uot;We’ve been busy all over the state,&uot; Moore said. &uot;My campaign has really been about just doing my job.&uot;

Part of that job included some positive results from the Operation Clean Sweep raid conducted Aug. 19 in Hinds, Claiborne and Jefferson counties.

&uot;Seventy-five percent of the people arrested in Operation Clean Sweep were in prison within 30 days of their arrest,&uot; Moore said. The remaining 25 percent of arrests outstanding were bogged down in larger court systems like Hinds County, he said.

Coordinated effort on the part of many law enforcement branches made the operation the success it was, Moore said.
