Scary stories on tap at ghost tales event
Published 12:00 am Wednesday, October 27, 1999
Halloween is just around the corner and on Friday, beginning at 6:30 p.m., several local storytellers will tell their scariest ghost tales around a huge bonfire at the 15th Annual Ghost Tales Around the Campfire at Historic Jefferson College.
In ancient times superstitious people, believing that ghosts would visit the earth on the last day of October, built bonfires to keep the ghosts away. Several years ago, Historic Jefferson College revived the custom of building the bonfire and invited storytellers to tell their scariest tales in the dark night.
Several fine storytellers will tell the favorite spooky tales Friday including, Joan McLemore, Co-Lin Community College librarian; Sandra Peoples, Morgantown Elementary School librarian; and Sarah Mutziger of Meridian. Those attending should bring blankets or lawn chairs and join the storytellers, the ghosts and the goblins at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Jefferson College.
Ghost Tales Around the Campfire is sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The event is open free to the public. For more information call 442-2901.
