Man travels across country with cross

Eddie Dickinson of La Mesa, Texas, is witnessing to the lost by doing what Jesus did nearly 2,000 years ago: bearing a cross.

On Wednesday, Dickinson finished walking across Louisiana carrying on his back a 13-foot wooden cross carved with the words &uot;Jesus is Lord.&uot;

Dickinson said the Lord called him in 1996 in Longview, Texas, to build a cross and &uot;go out into the highways and byways witnessing to backsliding Christians and the lost.&uot; Since then, the former oil field worker has walked 2,200 miles with the cross traveling across states like Texas, New Mexico and Colorado.

&uot;I’ve gotten every kind of reaction you can imagine, from folks screaming at me to people coming up to me crying because they’re hurting. People are hungering for the Lord,&uot; he said as he carried the cross along U.S. 84. &uot;But this isn’t about me. This is about witnessing for the Lord.&uot;

Dickinson is not alone in his travels. His wife, Glenda, drives before him in a Jeep. Their friend Kelly Cave walks before him waving a brightly colored pennant that simply says &uot;Jesus.&uot; Her husband, Paul, walks beside Dickinson.

The Caves met Dickinson this September when he came through their hometown of Weatherford, Texas.

&uot;I had a vision two days before I&160;met him. God told me a man would come bearing a cross and that we were to go with him,&uot; Paul Cave said. &uot;We just walked away. We knew it’s what the Lord wanted us to do.&uot;

Will they travel across Mississippi next?

&uot;I don’t know,&uot; Dickinson said. &uot;The Lord hasn’t told me yet.&uot;
