Vidalia falls in regionals

Vidalia High’s football season came to an end Friday night in Baton Rouge, La., as the fourth-ranked Vikings were upset by Christian Life 31-20 in the second round of the LHSAA Class 2A playoffs.
&uot;Our kids played great tonight,&uot; Vidalia assistant coach Johnny Hoffpauir said. &uot;We gave up two quick touchdowns, but we fought back from that.&uot;
Christian Life scored twice in the first quarter as Raymond Mason returned the opening kickoff 81 yards and substitute Michael Clayton threw a 14-yard pass to Nick Bernhard.
Vidalia answered back with two touchdowns of its own in the second quarter, but missed on both extra point attempts.
Senior running back Dariel Mays, who had 24 carries for 139 yards, scored on a two-yard run and Vidalia quarterback Jarrett Hoffpauir threw a 10-yard pass to Leren Curry to make the halftime score 14-12 in favor of Christian Life.
Christian Life scored twice again in the third quarter on a 35-yard pass from Clayton to Terrell Browden and on a 20-yard field goal to take a 24-12 lead.
Vidalia cut the lead to four on a 69-yard run by Mays and a two-point conversion run by Hoffpauir.
After a Vikings drive ended with four minutes left in the game because of penalties, Christian Life put the game out of reach on a nine-yard run by Jeff Johnson.
&uot;We had a great year, but we came up a little bit short,&uot; coach Hoffpauir said.
Vidalia finished the season with a 10-2 record.
Vidalia defeated East Beauregard 47-14 in a first round contest.
Christian Life will face Vermillion Catholic in a Class 2A quarterfinal contest.
Vermillion Catholic upset Newman 21-14 Friday.
