NHS, Vidalia boys post victories

The Natchez Bulldogs went on a 14-0 run to break open a close game and then cruised to a 70-46 victory over the Jefferson County Bulldogs Friday night at the Natchez High School Hoops Classic.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures for the game. Jovon Edwards and David Haywood each had 14 points, Vasshan Newborne had 13 points and Travis Nealy had 12 points.
Haywood also had three blocks and three rebounds. Newborne had four rebounds and two steals. Edwards and Nealy each had six rebounds.
After the Bulldogs took a 33-24 lead early in the third quarter, the Tigers scored the next five points to cut the lead to four.
Then the Bulldogs went on the 14-0 run to put the game out of reach. The Bulldogs then led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter.
Derrick Culbert led the Tigers with 22 points, but none of his teammates scored in double figures to help him out.
The Bulldogs also got a good game from Jamal Bouldin, who had eight points and made two three-pointers.
The Natchez Lady Bulldogs could not overcome a terrible first quarter and Shaquita Smith’s 23 points in a 54-50 loss to the Jefferson County Lady Tigers.
Smith also had 10 rebounds and four blocks to go with her 23 points as the Lady Tigers never trailed in the game.
The Lady Bulldogs came as close as two points, 26-24 at halftime, of the Lady Tigers, but they could not tie or take the lead.
Chrystal Sylvester had 12 points, four rebounds and one steal to lead the Lady Bulldogs and Angel Taylor had nine points.
The Lady Bulldogs did not score its first points of the game until 3:11 remaining in the first quarter on a jumper by Jakeisha Hawkins, who finished with seven points.
In earlier action, the Vidalia Vikings got a solid performance from Jarvis Vaughn in a 47-38 win over the Ferriday Trojans.
Vaughn had 12 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and three blocks. Ronald Ellis led the Vikings in scoring with 13 points.
Derrick Williams led the Trojans with 10 points and 16 rebounds while Jason Scott had seven points and five rebounds.
Jackie Thomas also had seven points and four rebounds.
