The Natchez Bulldogs are glad to see the Amite County team leave town Friday night. The Trojans swept the Bulldogs during basketball action
The Lady Trojans got solid performances from Janna Lyons and Charlotte Beasley in a surprisingly dominant 51-38 win Friday night over the Natchez Lady Bulldogs.
Lyons had a game-high 17 points and Beasley was not far behind with 12 points to lead Amite County.
The Lady Bulldogs had the lead only three times in the game – all in the first three minutes of the first quarter and the last one at 7-6 with about five minutes to play in the quarter.
After the Lady Trojans regained the lead at 8-7 they never relinquished thanks in large part to a suffocating defense that forced a lot of turnovers.
The Lady Bulldogs had only one player score in double figures – Chrystal Sylvester, who finished with a team-high 10 points.
Christen West, the leading scorer for Natchez, was held to only seven points.
West missed several free throws and made only one three-pointer before fouling out with 17 seconds to play in the game.
Trailing 20-14 at halftime, the Lady Bulldogs cut the Lady Trojans’ lead to two at 24-22 in the third quarter, but could not get any closer.
The Lady Trojans then built as much as a 14-point lead at 47-33 late in the game to put the game out of reach.
Despite a game-high 21 points from David Haywood, the Natchez Bulldogs could not overcome a 22-point third-quarter deficit and lost 46-36 to the Amite County Trojans.
The Bulldogs could hardly get a field goal or a free throw to drop in the basket in the first half against the Trojans, who jumped out to an 18-7 first quarter lead.
The Trojans’ lead increased to as many as 20 points, 29-9 in the second quarter, before Haywood made a three-pointer, his first of four in the game, with 10 seconds left until halftime. Natchez trailed 29-12 at the half.
It appeared like the rout would continue for the Trojans in the second half as they built the lead up to 37-15 nearly midway through the third quarter.
The Bulldogs then went on a 9-0 run to close out the third quarter to cut the lead to 13 at 37-24 and then to 10 points three times in the fourth quarter.
However, the Bulldogs could not get any closer than that as the margin of victory for the Trojans ended up being 10 points. Emanuel Stewart led the Trojans with 15 points, three rebounds and three blocks. DeKendrick Hughes had 11 points, made three three-pointers and had five rebounds.
