The Jacksonville Jaguars still have to get past today’s Buffalo-Indianapolis winner to get to the Super Bowl. Earlier, close to Jacksonville’s ALLTEL Stadium, Natchez’s Timmy Foster captured his own championship, winning the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick National Finals in the boys 10-11 division.
&uot;I’m excited about winning it,&uot; Foster said from his Jacksonville hotel room Saturday night.
The 5-foot-4, 125-pound Foster advanced to the finals by winning separate competitions at the local, sectional and regional events, the final of which was held at the Louisiana Superdome prior to a New Orleans Saints game.
Foster was one of 32 boys and girls, ages 8-15, who competed Saturday.
More than 3.5 million youngsters nationwide participated in the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick in 1999.
Saturday’s competition pitted Foster against three other national finalists.
After the 8-9 competition was completed, Foster went first in his division.
&uot;I think that was good because I was ready to start,&uot; he said.
Foster, a sixth-grader at Adams County Christian School, finished with a total composite score of 278.1, which was less than his 322.7 winning score in New Orleans. The scores are based on distance minus accuracy (in feet).
&uot;I&160;felt good about my score because it was cold in the morning and the wind was picking up,&uot; Foster said. &uot;I wasn’t real happy about my punt, but I came back and threw the ball and kicked it well. The wind had died down when I kicked it.&uot;
In the Superdome last November before the New Orleans-Tampa Bay contest, Foster won the Saints team championship by throwing the ball 126.7 feet, punting it 99.7 feet and kicking it 96.3 feet.
Foster was unsure of his yardage Saturday and only the composite score was listed on the results.
Kayle Sickler of Troy, Penn., had a score of 250.2; Stephen Paskorz of Gibsonia, Penn., had a score of 248.11; and Germayne Edmond of Dangerfield, Texas totaled 170.10 points.
&uot;I knew when they finished that I had won,&uot; Foster said.
Foster’s score was actually the third highest in the entire competition.
&uot;I’m glad it’s over,&uot; Foster said.
For his accomplishment, Foster won a large wooden football trophy on a wooden tee with the Punt, Pass & Kick logo.
&uot;I’m not sure what else I get,&uot; he said.
Jacksonville defeated Miami 62-7 in front of all of the PP&K competitors.
&uot;It was exciting to watch,&uot; Foster said. &uot;They fired cannon after every touchdown.&uot;
Foster had said advancing to the finals was a major highlight, but still was second to playing for the state finals in Dixie Youth 9-10 in Biloxi.
&uot;This definitely beats that,&uot; he said.
