A family disturbance ended with the arrest of a Natchez uncle and nephew at the same time and place Monday night for unrelated charges.
Shelvie L. Ross, 49, 9 Roundale St., was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly shooting his brother, Gerald Ross Sr., 51, also of 9 Roundale St., in the left hip. He has been released on $10,000 bond.
Gerald Ross Jr., Shelvie’s nephew and son of the victim, was arrested because police had a warrant on him for armed robbery. He was also charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Police first arrived at the scene Monday night because they heard someone had been shot at 9 Roundale St., said Natchez Police Chief Willie Huff.
According to police reports, Gerald Ross Sr. was on the couch, bleeding from a hip wound when officers arrived.
Police believe Shelvie shot his brother because of an argument they were having over 18-year-old Darryl, a second son of Gerald Ross Sr.
Darryl came back to the house late Monday night. Huff said Shelvie became upset because he believed Darryl disturbed the sleep of Nancy Ross, the 87-year-old owner of the house and mother of Shelvie and Gerald Sr.
Police reports said Gerald Sr. struck Shelvie in the jaw, then Shelvie got his .38 revolver and shot Gerald Sr. outside the house.
Shelvie was arrested at the scene and Gerald Sr. was treated and released from Natchez Regional Medical Center.
Gerald Ross Jr. was not at the house at the time of the shooting but came later to check on his father, police said.
That’s when officers realized there was a warrant out for his arrest for armed robbery. The victim of the armed robbery says he was walking through Holiday Apartments and Ross pulled a gun, hit him in the head and took his money, Huff said.
Ross Jr. was being held on a $20,634 bond Tuesday evening.
