Trinity Episcopal High is hosting the District 6A Basketball Tournament beginning today and ending with the championships on Saturday.
The top four teams advance to South State in Minden, La.
&uot;That means the boys and girls can advance with one win,&uot; said Trinity boys coach David King.
Trinity’s boys are the top seed and are more than happy to have the home court advantage, considering the Saints are 39-4 at home in the last four years.
Action begins today at 4 p.m. with Ben’s Ford girls facing Tallulah. At 5:30 p.m., Presbyterian Christian’s boys meet Tallulah. Huntington’s boys face River Oaks at 7 p.m. The final game of the night has Briarfield facing Tensas’ boys.
Trinity’s girls face Franklin at 7 p.m., while Huntington’s girls meet Franklin Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
Trinity’s boys meet the Presbyterian Christian-Tallulah winner Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
While Trinity’s boys are the top seed, King said River Oaks could be considered a favorite.
&uot;River Oaks is extremely tall and athletic,&uot; King said. &uot;It’s going to be a great tournament. There’s a lot more parity this year than there has been the last two years.
&uot;I look for the sleepers to be Tensas and Franklin and possibly Huntington,&uot; King said. &uot;We certainly want to wish them all the best with what they’ve been through.&uot;
Huntington High lost junior Eric Smith to a one-car accident last week.
Trinity enters the tournament with a 19-5 record.
&uot;We just need to care of business and play like we’ve been playing,&uot;&160;King said. &uot;We’re playing unselfish basketball and we just need to stay healthy.&uot;
Trinity’s girls are 19-6 on the season.
&uot;I’m proud of my girls,&uot; said Trinity coach Melanie Hall. &uot;They have played with a lot of heart and unity. The big thing we’ve stressed all year is to play hard, play smart, have fun and use the talent and ability to your fullest.&uot;
Hall said guard Sara Greer should be ready to play after missing the last two games with a sprained ankle.
