Cathedral’s first-ever home playoff soccer game did not turn out the way it was supposed to against St. Andrews as the Saints defeated the Green Wave 4-1 Saturday at D’Evereaux Stadium.

Early in the first half it looked like the Green Wave had the momentum going their way after Curtis Minor’s goal gave them a 1-0 lead just 2:20 into the game.

&uot;We caught them before they woke up,&uot; said Green Wave head coach Paul &uot;Rocky&uot; Kettering.

Thirty minutes later, Aaron Samuels scored the first of his three goals to tie the game at 1-1, which would end up being the score at halftime.

The Saints had 23 shots on goal in the first half to only nine for the Green Wave.

&uot;Their defense and goalkeeper (Derek Gleason) were just we thought,&uot; Kettering said. &uot;St. Andrews is a smart team. They actually got their shots from the midfielder.&uot;

It didn’t take long for St. Andrews to get going in the second as Samuels’ second goal gave the Saints a 2-1 lead with 33:35 remaining.

Four and a half minutes later, Samuels scored again on a penalty kick that bounced off the leg of Green Wave goalkeeper Tate Hobdy for a 3-1 lead.

St. Andrews put the game away on Steve Cohen’s goal with 17:13 remaining for a 4-1 lead.

The Saints had 35 shots on goal for the game while the Green Wave had only 17 shots on goal.

&uot;They were persistent with their attack mode. They had twice as many shots as we did and you can’t win that way,&uot; Kettering said.

Minor had a good chance to cut into the Saints’ lead late in the game, but Parke McManis made an outstanding save while Gleason was out of position.

&uot;I’m proud of the way we played. I’m also proud that didn’t give up,&uot; Kettering said.

&uot;They kept shooting until the end. The kids felt great knowing everyone was behind them.&uot;

Cathedral finished the season with a 7-7 record. St. Andrews improved to 9-8-2.
