Brookhaven gets easy win over Natchez

Brookhaven High’s varsity baseball team pounded out seventeen hits, including five home runs, to defeat Natchez High 25-3 Friday night at Liberty Park in five innings.

In addition to giving up 17 hits, the Bulldogs committed eight errors in the first three innings.

Brookhaven jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, led by left fielder Lorenzo McNulty’s grand slam homer.

The Panthers then added two more home runs – one by third baseman/pitcher Miguel Banks and an inside-the-park homer by center fielder Fred Perking – in a nine-run second inning.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the second when designated hitter Marquis Kinds scored on a Lance Harveston double and third baseman/pitcher Bert Goldman scored on a Leon Stewart groundout.

Brookhaven then scored six more runs in the third inning, with the big hit being Banks’ three-run homer, to give the Panthers a 20-2 lead.

Second baseman Daniel Boyd hit a solo home run as part of a four-run fourth inning to increase the Panthers’ lead to 22 runs.

Brookhaven would score another run in the top of the fifth before Natchez scored in the bottom of the inning when Stewart scored on a Brock Barlow single.

Barlow went 2-for-3 with a double for Natchez High.

Banks went 3-for-4, McNulty was 3-for-5, Perkins was 3-for-3 and catcher Aaron Oberschmidt was 3-for-4 for Brookhaven.

Cayce Wallace was the winning pitcher for the Panthers, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out four and walking only one through three innings. Banks allowed only one run on one hit, struck out two and walked none in two innings.

Harveston took the loss for Natchez High, allowing five runs (3 earned) on two hits while striking out one and walking two in just 2/3 of an inning.

Natchez High, 1-6, hosts McComb Saturday at 5 p.m. at Liberty Park. The junior varsity game starts at 3 p.m.

In the junior varsity game, Brookhaven defeated Natchez 6-2. Dusty Gerald was the winning pitcher for Brookhaven while Oliver Stewart was the losing pitcher for Natchez High.
