Scott Co. society to release new book

The Scott County, Miss., Genealogical Society has announced plans to publish a new book containing county-related and family histories and is asking for your help!

This large hardbound book, titled SCOTT COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI HISTORY AND FAMILIES, will contain a comprehensive history of the county since its formation, histories of all communities (past and present), histories of churches, clubs, organizations, memorials and tributes, and special historical highlights of Scott County. The bulk of the text will contain the histories of Scott County families both past and present. The book is being published with Rose Publishing Company of Humboldt, Tennessee, specialists in county-related family history books and pictorial histories. Rose has or is currently publishing books in DeSoto, Kemper, Monroe, Alcorn, Newton, Carroll, Pontotoc, Lee, Tippah, Jasper, Calhoun, Smith and Tishomingo counties and is known for its high quality work.

Any family who now lives in Scott County or has ever lived in or had any family ties to the county will be eligible to submit up to 500 words with one family photograph free of charge. Additional photos can be included for $15 each and additional words are subject to a nominal charge of 15 cents per word over the 500 word limit. The Society asks that people submitting family stories do so in a typed and double-spaced form if possible. The book will be offered at a special pre-sale price of $52 plus $5 shipping if mailed. Brochures will be available by the end of February explaining how to write and submit your family history to the book committee. Katherine Roberts (3334 Beaumont Drive, Pearl, Miss. 39208, (601) 939-5902) wishes to correspond with anyone having knowledge of Mr. EDWARD JEFFERSON POWELL who was born 2 February 1886 in Attala County, Miss., the son of JOSEPH (JOE) HENRY POWELL and VIRGINIA ANNA (GENNIE) BOWMAN. Edward married ANNA LIZEE E. JONES on 25 December 1909 in Attala County. Anna was an Attala County native born 4 June 1889. The couple had three sons: James Powell, John Powell and Edward Jefferson Powell, Jr. Can anyone help with information on these family members?

Joe Pierce (3120 Aurora, El Paso, Texas 79930, (915) 562-5177, e-mail josepier@aol.com) is searching for information on the old Covington County family of JOHN SANFORD who as born ca 1783 in South Carolina and died after 1870 in Covington County, Miss. Mr. Sanford was a Baptist minister who married MARY &uot;POLLY&uot; HOLLAND who was born in 1790 in South Carolina and died after 1860 in Covington County. The couple had six children: DARRELL SANFORD (born 1814 in South Carolina, died in Silver Creek, Lawrence County, Miss., married Mary? in 1836); JOSEPH SANFORD (born 1816 in South Carolina, married NANCY BULLOCK born 1820 in Miss.); SOPHIE ANN (SAFIARY) SANFORD (born 1817 in South Carolina, married JESSIE LEVI BRYANT in 1838); JOHN D. SANFORD (born in 1828, married REBECCA PHILLIPS); ROBERT SANFORD (born 1822 in Mississippi, married CATHERINE FOSTER who was born in 1826); MARY SANFORD (born in 1826 in Perry County, Miss. married 1st to a Mr. BIGGS, married 2nd to ISAAC RIALS who was born in 1830 in Alabama. These were Mr. Pierce’s great great grandparents).

Mr. Pierce is also searching for the parents of FLOYD PIERCE who was born 14 January 1834 and died 25 March 1893 in Wilmer, Mobile County, Ala. He married SARAH ANN PIERCE on 7 July 1857 in Mobile County, Ala. Sarah was the daughter of JEREMIAH PIERCE SR and NANCY MCLAIN. She was born on 11 July 1840. Floyd and Sarah are buried in the Palestine Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Mobile County. Their children lived in the Mobile County, Alabama, and George and Jackson County Miss. areas. Can any reader help with information. Mr. Pierce is eager to share the information with any interested reader.
