Brookhaven holds off Trinity

Brookhaven Academy’s varsity baseball team jumped out to a big lead then held off two rallies to defeat Trinity 14-13 Saturday in a three and a half hour game.
Despite getting outhit by Trinity 16 to 9, the Cougars took advantage of seven Saints errors and 13 walks.
Leading 2-1 after two innings, the Cougars scored five runs in the top of the third without getting a hit.
Third baseman Tatum Tranthum scored when left fielder walked with the bases loaded. Designated hitter Carl Craig and right fielder Jeffrey Waycastor scored on a passed ball.
Coker and starting pitcher Chad Lagrone each scored on separate Trinity errors.
The Cougars appeared to be in command after taking a 11-1 lead after 4 1/2 innings.
However, the Saints (2-1) would not go away easily, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to one.
William McGehee, who had five singles in five at bats, singled to score two runs.
Catcher Chase Brown tripled to score McGehee and right fielder Walt Ketchings.
Center fielder Bobby Craig doubled to bring in two more runs. Relief pitcher Elliot Meng had an RBI single.
After the Cougars scored one run in the top of the sixth and two runs in the seventh to give them a 14-10 lead, Trinity had one more chance to either tie or win the game.
Craig and left fielder Cole Brown scored on a Walt Ketchings single. After McGehee scored on a Cougar error, Walt Ketchings tried to tie the game but was easily tagged by catcher Kelly Allred for the final out.
&uot;We’re young and we’re getting better,&uot; said Trinity head baseball coach David King. &uot;There were too many poor at-bats at key times.&uot;
McGehee was the losing pitcher for Trinity, giving up 7 runs (4 earned) on just three hits, striking out five and walking six in three innings.
Lagrone was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on seven hits.
In the junior varsity game, Brookhaven Academy defeated Trinity 12-7. Ryan Rachal was the losing pitcher.
Trinity plays at WCCA next Friday with the JV game at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.
