Lady Vikings defeat defending champions

VIDALIA, La. –&160;It took Vidalia High’s softball team three extra innings, but the Lady Vikings defeated two-time defending Vidalia Tournament champion Jena 5-4 in the seventh inning to keep the tourney trophy in Vidalia Saturday.

&uot;We finally got it back,&uot; said Vidalia head coach Gary Paul Parnham.

Both teams advanced undefeated through their pools to advance to the title game.

The contest was tied at 3-3 after four innings with the time limit up.

Louisiana high schools have gone to the international tiebreaker for softball games where a runner is put at second base with one out to start out each extra inning.

Both teams scored one run in the fifth inning and went scoreless in the sixth.

The Lady Giants did not score in the seventh inning.

Amanda Stricklin singled Jenny Watson home in Vidalia’s seventh for the win.

&uot;I was glad we had to go through the international rule because that’s something we need to experience,&uot; Parnham said. &uot;I thought the girls handled the pressure well.&uot;

Stricklin, Jessica Marling, Heather Miller and Jaci DeWeese had two hits each in the championship game.

Stricklin picked up the win, striking out five.

&uot;Amanda did not pitch well in our first two games, but the last game she really picked it up,&uot; Parnham said.

In the first game of the day, Vidalia defeated Franklin County 7-4 as Marling, Stephanie Elliot and Maggie Dungan had two hits each.

Mandy McGehee and Cassie Thornton had two hits each for Franklin.

Jena defeated Vidalia’s junior varsity team 3-2.

&uot;I was very pleased with the JV&160;team,&uot; Parnham said. &uot;They played well against three quality teams.&uot;

Jena blanked Winnsboro 7-0, while Vidalia shut out Rayville 10-0.

Winnsboro defeated Vidalia’s junior varsity 9-1.

Vidalia’s junior varsity&160;nipped Rayville 8-7.

In the third place game, Franklin County defeated Winnsboro 11-3.

&uot;Franklin County had a game at Forest (Friday) and didn’t get back until midnight, so we appreciate them being here,&uot; Parnham said.
