The East Tennessee Historical Society has announced plans to host a weekend-long genealogy conference and family history fair May 26-28 in Knoxville, Tenn.–a wonderful excuse for the sons and daughters of
Tennessee’s pioneer founders to head home for Memorial Day weekend!
Guests attending the conference will be offered a wide variety of options and activities including a two-day genealogy conference featuring both national and regional experts, a family history fair and street party in downtown
Knoxville, motorcoach tours of historic East Tennessee sites, and a &uot;family reunion&uot; dinner at the home of Tennessee’s first governor, John Sevier.
The genealogy conference, held at Knoxville’s Hilton Hotel, will examine Southeastern &uot;roots and routes&uot;- focusing on our ancestors and their migrations into and out of East Tennessee. Guest speakers will discuss a variety of topics including Scots-Irish research, Cherokee genealogy, Tennessee land records, Tennesseans in the California gold rush, frontier religion and more. Experts will also discuss research topics in states associated with Tennessee’s earliest residents, including Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.
In addition to the multi-track genealogy conference, ETHS will host a family history fair featuring mini-workshops for beginners, vendor displays, tours of local historic sites, carriage rides in downtown Knoxville, and living history demonstrations. The fair will also include a downtown street party outside the historical society’s headquarters with live music, dramatic performances, historic reenactments, children’s activities and more.
Attendance at all events is open to anyone with an interest in history and genealogy or who has Tennessee roots. For additional information contact the East Tennessee Historical Society at 865-215-8824 or visit the historical society’s website at www.east-tennessee-history.org.
DOES ANYONE KNOW…..
n Isabelle G. Pointer (200 Dominican Drive #5203, Madison, Miss. 39110-8630, 601-856-0210, e-mail StCat1@aol.com) is seeking help with her research on the WALLACE-ROUSE family. Diannis &uot;Dicy&uot; Wallace married Charles Sidney Rouse somewhere between 1860 and 1866 (when and where?). The census of 1860 Marion County, Mississippi, lists a Dicy Wallis, age 30 with a child, Martha Wallis (age 2), living with J. J. Williams (age 51), his wife Elizabeth (age 45), and their eight children. What is her connection with this family and why is she living with them? Is she a sister of Elizabeth’s? Who were Dicy’s parents? The 1900 Pearl River, Mississippi, census lists Mrs. Dicy Rouse living with her granddaughter, Mary W. Wallace, age 19. Did she have a daughter who married a Wallace? In the 1910 census, Dicy, age 73 and living with her son George Irving Rouse, states that she gave birth to three children but only two of them were then living. Who were her other two children? George Irving Rouse, born 1866, married Harriet Corine Newman of Louisiana and they had six children listed in the censuses of 1900 and 1910 in Pearl River County. These were Alice, Charles S., Dicy Ann, Irving Elridge, Kizzie and Georgy M. Whom did Alice, Charles , Dicy and George marry? Are there any descendants of these four children? Harriet Corine Newman’s parents were James Madison Newman and Annie Jane Howard. Where in Louisiana did they live? Did they have any children and if so who were they?
