Leaking roof at Thompson still troubles Grennell

Adams County Supervisor Darrell Grennell could not believe the state of the Thompson School roof when he went out to examine it Monday morning.
Although the county has spent thousands to fix the roof, Monday’s early morning thunderstorm caused water to leak into the school’s recently reroofed auditorium.
The roof was also leaking in a closet next to the school’s main office, Grennell said. &uot;When I looked up in the closet at the ceiling, I could see the sky,&uot; he said.
The hole was about 7 inches in diameter and water was gushing everywhere, he added.
Grennell visited the North Union Street school before his 9 a.m. board meeting Monday because he had received a call about the problem.
&uot;It was so disturbing to me when I got over there,&uot; he said. &uot;I couldn’t believe it.&uot;
The county board spent $48,000 last year to install an new roof over the auditorium.
On Monday, rain was coming in over the stage, Grennell said.
The county spent $40,000 in 1994, $16,000 in 1998 and more than $5,000 last year to fix sections of the roof on the county-owned building.
Thompson School, which houses about 500 Head Start children, is still operating under a probational license from the Mississippi Department of Health due to the roof problem.
The license is up for renewal May 31.
The school is operated by AJFC Community Action Agency and is looking into other funding sources for the roof. Grennell said his next step would be to discuss Monday’s roof problems with Fuller Roofing, a company the county hired to do much of the recent work on the Thompson roof.
