Parity alive and well in college hoops

So now what? Extend the field to 100 teams? Parity is certainly the word of the millennium when it comes to college basketball.
And with more and more young players taking off early for the NBA, and the possibility of some type of farm league for the professional league, dynasties may be a thing of the past.
Michigan State won the national championship Monday thanks in great part to seniors Mateen Cleaves, Morris Peterson and A.J. Granger. All three went against the norm, passing up a chance to go to the NBA early.
Without Cleaves, or probably even without Peterson or Granger the Spartans would not have been there.
Florida certainly overachieved with the young group they put together.
They also showed that the Southeastern Conference got the short end of the stick when it came to seedings.
No SEC team had a seeding higher than No. 4. The Gators were a No. 5 seed.
Then again, seedings don’t mean a whole lot anymore. It’s gotten to where any team is capable of beating any other team on any given night. Ask anybody who played Wisconsin or Gonzaga.
I do think the time has come for winners of certain conferences to play each other to determine certain bids.
The tournament winner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference could face the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament winner, etc. You could justifiably do that for about eight conferences and that would free up four more selections. It would also make those tournament selections more credible.
It’s truly anybody’s game at this stage and more teams deserve a shot.
If you want to catch Josh Hoffpauir or Joseph Paul in action, Fox Sport Net South will televise Southern Mississippi’s home game with Louisville Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Hoffpauir is an infielder from Vidalia, La., while Paul is a pitcher from Monterey, La.
Fox Sport Net South will also carry USM’s May 14 home game with Houston at 2:30 p.m.
Cellular South will telecast USM’s home game with Alabama on April 11 at 6:30 p.m.; and the April 25-26 home games against Mississippi State, if you know someone with a satellite.
Fox Sport Net South also is scheduled to televise the Conference USA tournament championship game from Tampa on May 21.
I can’t believe I’m going to have to break out the ol’ long-sleeved shirt again for a high school baseball game.
Adams County Christian School hosts Hillcrest, Natchez welcomes Forest Hill, Vidalia visits Ferriday and Cathedral is at Richland.
AC, the defending South AAAA champion, hosts Hillcrest, a team many are picking to win the state championship this year.
Natchez High faces a must-win situation against Forest Hill if the Bulldogs are to make the postseason.
Vidalia has been able to play only one district game (beating McCall around the rain Saturday). Ferriday is in its first year of baseball in several years, so anything can happen. And it usually does when these to schools get together.
Cathedral High should have no problem at Richland today (sorry, Coach Beesley). But the Green Wave, with two district losses, cannot afford to stumble at this stage.
Cathedral cannot lose another division game and expect to be in the playoffs. As it stands now, Cathedral will have to beat both St. Andrews and Loyd Star the second time around to just have a chance to make it.
But first things first.
The action will be heated on diamonds around the area tonight. Just remember to dress warmly.
