Four Natchez High powerlifters hope to be pushing their weight around and more at the state powerlifting meet Saturday at Forest Hill High in Jackson.
Alonzo Green, Don Jackson, Israel Calvit and Cordell Williams will represent Natchez High, while &uot;You don’t worry about what your competitors do, you just do what you can do,&uot; said Williams, who finished third in the 220-pound with 1,124 points. &uot;This is state, so you want to have your best numbers in each event because this is it.&uot;
&uot;My best score is 1,025, so I just want to do better than that,&uot; said Jackson, who finished third at South State in the 181-pound division with 990 points.
&uot;I’m looking to at least finish second,&uot; said Green, who finished second in the 165-pound division with 985 points. &uot;I’m going up there to give it my best.&uot;
Calvit said he hasn’t been able to work out as much as he would like because of his regular work.
&uot;I’m going for first place, but I’m really hoping to at least get third,&uot;&160;said Calvit, who finished second in the 220-pound division with 1,255 points. &uot;If I can get 1,255 points, I think I will be in good shape.&uot;
Natchez is coached by Joe Johnson.
Johnson is in his first year as head coach.
&uot;The best way to explain it is that my wife (Willie Mae Gaines Johnson) and I have two daughters, but these are my sons,&uot;&160;Johnson said. &uot;This year I have experienced that feeling of a father watching his sons.&uot;
Johnson said he has high expectations for the meet.
&uot;We’re young, but if we do what we are capable of doing, we’ll come out great,&uot; he said. &uot;We want to put some good numbers up early and make everyone else have to catch up.&uot;
