VIDALIA, La. -&160;Vidalia High head baseball coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir was wondering about his team’s character after the Vikings fell to Crowville 6-4 in eight innings Thursday, forcing an immediate second game to decide the champion of District 3-2A.
Crowville pitcher Jeremy Raley struck out 15 Vikings in the first game.
But after winning the second game 15-8 and the title, Hoffpauir did not have to wonder much longer.
&uot;The first game I was so disappointed with our approach to the plate,&uot;&160;Hoffpauir said. &uot;And we had five errors to go along with our 15 strikeouts. But we came back and stung the ball pretty good in the second game. We had some great plays defensively. Matt (Dillon) did a great job in left field and Jarrett (Hoffpauir)&160;had a good game at short.&uot;
Vidalia was the visiting team in the second game. The Vikings scored six runs in the second inning, added three more in the fourth and six in seventh.
Vidalia led 9-1 before Crowville came back to within 9-5 going into the final inning.
Ryan Boles led off Vidalia’s seventh by getting hit by a pitch, Collin Taunton singled, Terrell Williams was intentionally walked and Hoffpauir hit a grand slam home run, his second home run of the day for a total of eight on the year. Adam Probst then tripled and went home on an overthrow for a 15-5 Vidalia lead.
Probst also singled twice.
Crowville scored three in their last at bat.
Vidalia had six home runs on the day, as Rod Donald hit his second home run of the day in the second game and Bryan Bennett also homered, giving Vidalia a school record 44 on the year.
Donald improved his home run total to 12, and his career school record to 28.
&uot;We’ve been winning with the big hit,&uot; Hoffpauir said.
Vidalia used the long ball for its runs in the first game on as Hoffpauir, Donald and Taunton each homered.
Crowville’s Doyle Little and Aaron Beedle also homered in the contest.
Vidalia had 14 hits in the second game.
Winning pitcher Kevin Laird, Dillon and Ryan Boles all doubled for the Vikings in the second game.
Vidalia will play at McCall today at 1 p.m. to end its regular season. The Vikings will host a wild card team next week.
