Natchez High falls to Gulfport

When you leave 14 runners on base and commit four errors in a playoff game, chances are not good for coming out on top. That’s what happened to Natchez High Saturday at Liberty Park, although the Bulldogs rallied to make a game of it before falling to Gulfport 11-7.

The Admirals advance to the second round of the playoffs after sweeping Natchez, defeating the Bulldogs 9-5 Thursday in Gulfport.

Natchez ends its season at 8-18.

Gulfport used a home run by Robbie Henderson and grand slam from John Parker, to take an 8-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.

&uot;We just don’t have the offense to give up that many runs,&uot; said Natchez coach Michael Lindsey. &uot;If we would made the plays on defense, we could have won 7-2. But that’s been the story of our season.&uot;

Walks to Brian Kossum and Marques Kinds and singles by Nolan Coward and Brock Barlow scored two runs, bringing Natchez to within 8-4.

&uot;They gave us a lot of chances to get back in it, but we didn’t get the hits when we needed them,&uot; Lindsey said.

Doug DeGeorge slammed a 2-run home run in the fifth to put Gulfport up 10-4.

Beau Hale walked, Calvin Jackson reached on an errror and Coward hit a sacrifice fly to pull the Bulldogs to within 10-5.

Gulfport, 21-15, went up 11-5 in the sixth, but Natchez answered with two runs as Brian Kossum singled, Kinds doubled and Beau Hale reached on a passed ball to pull to within 11-7.

&uot;They could have gotten down after the grand slam, but to their credit they didn’t give up,&uot; said Gulfport coach Tim Holland. &uot;I told the kids Thursday that this would be a different Natchez team today and they hit the ball a lot better.&uot;

Kossum singled and Kinds reached on an error, but were stranded in the seventh.

Natchez left the bases loaded in the first and third innings.

The Bulldogs scored one in the first as Kossum singled and Kinds doubled and another in the second as Leon Stewart tripled to deep right and Coward singled.

Coward started for Natchez and was replaced by Lance Harveston in the fourth.

Gulfport faces the winner of the Northwest Rankin-Moss Point series.

&uot;I’m glad we got this in two games because it will give us a chance to rest,&uot; Holland said.

&uot;We’ve played a lot of games.&uot;
