As a member of Trinity Episcopal’s tennis team, Brian Redfield won under pressure. Redfield won South State in doubles in 1994 and then went on win the State championship in singles in 1996 and 1997.
But without a doubt his biggest win under pressure came this past weekend as Mississippi College took on Shriner College for the American Southwest Conference.
Redfield won the deciding match 6-4, 6-1 to help give Mississippi College the conference title.
&uot;Winning the conference title is definitely my highlight so far,&uot; Redfield said.
Especially for a college that has tough academic standards in Mississippi College, an NCAA Division III school.
Redfield was named American Southwest Conference Tennis Player of the Week earlier this year after compiling a combined 6-0 record in singles and doubles play.
&uot;That was an accomplishment I’m real proud of,&uot; he said.
Redfield, a Natchez native, led the Choctaws (8-2) to wins over conference foes McMurry, LeTourneau and cross-town rival Millsaps. Redfield, along with doubles partner Jeffrey Collum, rank No. 13 in the South Region.
Redfield started playing tennis at Trinity in the eighth grade on the varsity game. Since then, Redfield has gotten better year by year.
The 1997 Trinity graduate also was a six-year letterman and was named most valuable player four years.
&uot;It was a good experience playing at Trinity,&uot; Redfield said. &uot;I had a good coach in Noreen Pyron.&uot;
When he went to Mississippi College, Redfield said he had to improve on his game, especially after struggling in his freshman year.
&uot;My coach up here (David Boteler) helped me the most. My game improved by being able to play against good and tough opponents. I just needed to improve mentally.&uot;
Playing at the college level, Redfield said is &uot;a great experience.&uot;
&uot;My teammates and I have a lot of fun. We get to travel a lot.&uot;
The only downside, Redfield said, is having to miss a lot of classes while on the road.
Although Redfield doesn’t have a great serve, he likes to play the baseline a lot.
Now a junior majoring in marketing, Redfield said he wants to further his education by going to graduate school somewhere and then get a good-playing job.
With only one more year left in college, Redfield said he still has a few team goals he wants to accomplish – winning another conference title and a national title.
&uot;I’d love for it to come down to my match again,&uot; he said.
